Day 20 – Prompt #2: Meditation

I have a book called Complete the Story and it has 150 interesting writing prompts. I recommend it to anyone who often faces writer’s block. I am going to try to do one a day. This is day 20, and prompt #2 in the book. Today, my challenge was to make an uneventful story eventful.

It was that fleeting hour of day when the moon and sun are high and bright at the same time. Like many things in my life, these summer nights wouldn’t last much longer. I sat quietly on a rock, cross-legged. I slowly shut my eyes and the last thing I saw was my eyelashes closing around the treetops at the bottom of the hill before the busy world disappeared around me. I took in a long breath of cool air and felt it brush my nose. After holding it in for a second or two as if I was trying to save this moment, make it last longer, I let it out in a blissful sigh and smiled at nothing in particular. I tilted my head up and had another clear breath, forgetting anything having to do with real life — the good times, the bad times, the everyday mediocre times, all of it. I cleared my mind and just felt myself breathe. Each breath was a step forward into my world of peace. A delicate breeze gently pushed my long hair back and trickled past my face. As the little breeze grew to a gust of wind, I felt a dry leaf collapse into my hand. I started thinking about how summer seemed to have been shorter that year, but carefully guided my mind back to my breathing. I continued to sit calmly, breathing deeply, listening, feeling, smelling. A barbecue aroma drifted over to me, and I acknowledged it and ignored it at the same time. It went on like I just described until about an hour later, when I opened my eyes, slowly stood up, and walked back home, looking up at the lonely bright moon.
